Opened to the public in 1962, the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, includes both permanent and traveling exhibitions highlighting regional, national, European, Asian and other international artists.
“The permanent collection consists of more than 6,500 objects, ranging from a world-class collection of jade to one of the most comprehensive public collections of Louisiana art,” said Sarah Amacker, communications coordinator at the museum.
Mediums highlighted include painting, sculpture, decorative arts, photography and works on paper.
See works highlighting Louisiana history and culture in the “Art in Louisiana”exhibition. This 6,000-square-foot exhibit features works ranging from the 1700s to the present day.
“Galleries devoted to Newcomb Pottery, New Orleans Silver and contemporary Louisiana art make it a central hub for experiencing insightful and inspiring local works,” Amacker said.
Groups will also receive commentaries from five guest curators who offer their insights into the galleries included in “Art in Louisiana.”

One of the more popular permanent exhibits is the museum’s world-class Chinese Jade collection, housing pieces ranging from the 13th century to the 19th century. These pieces preserve the cultures of both the Yuan and Qing dynasties while boasting the beauty of intricately carved jade.
In addition to the many permanent works, the LSU Museum of Art hosts numerous traveling exhibits and special collections available for a limited time.
From late October 2020 to mid-February 2021, see “Southbound,” an impressive collection of 56 photographers’ visions of the South during the first two decades of the 21st century. In the spring of 2021, the museum will showcase “The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design.”This exhibit brings over 40 iconic chairs dating from the 18th century to today. See works by Frank Lloyd Wright and designs from manufacturers like Steelcase and Herman Miller.
