Welcome to Huntsville, Alabama, aka Rocket City! This city holds plenty of historic significance as the site where Alabama held the constitutional convention that made it a state, but also where tremendous scientific achievements contributed to America’s triumphs in the Space Race. Today, Huntsville offers groups a growing arts and entertainment scene, historic sites and homes, scenic views of northern Alabama, and a relaxing atmosphere.
Known as “Rocket City,” Huntsville is the home of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and was the birthplace of the rockets that put humans on the moon. Stand under the world’s only full-stack space shuttle, walk alongside a suspended Saturn V moon rocket, and visit the museum’s
permanent collection of artifacts, exhibits, and experiences, including the Explorer I, the first American satellite, design modules for the International Space Station, and the Intuitive Planetarium.
Immerse yourself in the arts at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, the largest privately owned arts facility in the United States. The property features 152 working studios with over 200 makers and seven galleries. Step back in time at Burritt on the Mountain, a historic park at the summit of Round Top Mountain.
Hit the streets of downtown Huntsville and the surrounding region for a drink-focused tour of the best bars, breweries, and cafes in the area. Pick up a free trail booklet for the Craft Beer Trail, Craft Cocktail Trail, and Craft Coffee Trail at the Huntsville/Madison County Visitor Center. Along the way, collect enough stamps from each participating trail stop to win a specialty cocktail strainer or Huntsville Craft Coffee Trail mug.
Visit the Huntsville Botanical Garden to explore over 118 acres of grassy meadows, woodland paths, aquatic habitats, and floral-filled gardens. On the Mathews Nature Trail, groups can follow a creekside path through a Southeastern lowland forest, common to this region of Alabama. Inside the Anderson Education Center, groups of all ages will enjoy the Purdy Butterfly House, the nation’s largest open-air butterfly house, where you can spot over 1,500 native butterflies.
