MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — Mackinac Island Tourism has announced plans for the 2020 Mackinac Island Fudge Festival, returning this year with a modified format featuring traditional and virtual experiences to enhance access and safety. The festival will take place Friday, Aug. 28 through Sunday, Aug. 30. Mackinac Island Tourism Executive Director Tim Hygh made the announcement.
 
“Our members have worked overtime to make the 2020 Fudge Festival a fun, safe reality for fans on the island and beyond,” Hygh said. “From implementing best practice safety measures and proliferating PPE to reformatting select events to offer a strong virtual experience, we are proud to bring this event to life again in spite of the uncertainty everyone has faced this year.”
 
The Mackinac Island Fudge Festival will feature programming throughout the weekend, including live and virtual fudge making demonstrations by the island’s world renowned fudge makers, a special new fudge flavor reveal at May’s Candy Shop, and an exploration of the history of fudge by the island’s Chief Fudge Taster Phil Porter. Guests may also enjoy a series of all-day raffles and giveaways found onsite and an outdoor showing of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. on Saturday night at Fort Mackinac, at 8:30 p.m. Additional virtual events hosted on Mackinac Island Tourism social media channels include Fudge Facts Trivia, already accepting answers, and a recipe contest with sweet prizes.
 
While several events have been reformatted to promote social distancing and safety, a number of events from past festivals have been cancelled, most notably the annual cornhole tournament on the lawn at Mission Point Resort, Funday Sunday and family games at Windermere Point.
