The Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Illinois, won’t open to the public until June 19, but as of May 6, groups can begin making their reservations to visit the newest institution in the presidential library system. The first block of available dates runs from opening day through Nov. 30, and weekends and summer dates are expected to fill up quickly. Groups of 10 or more have access to a personalized booking service along with streamlined entry. Ticketing also is open to all other parties as well, with prices ranging from $15 to $30, with a variety of discounts available for certain groups.
The Obama Presidential Center is currently under construction on the city’s South Side, mere blocks from the lakefront and close to the University of Chicago, where Obama attended law school. The 19-acre campus will include many public spaces, including a rooftop garden, Great Lawn, and a public library. But the centerpiece for visitors is likely to be the center’s museum. This four-level facility guides visitors through the story of Obama and his family from childhood on up to the White House. Exhibits are designed to be interactive and immersive; there is even a full-size replica of the Oval Office where visitors can take a seat behind the president’s desk.
Chicago is a city of many skyscrapers, but the Obama Presidential Center offers another lofty view with the Sky Room on the top level of the museum. Open at no charge to the public, the Sky Room is a place to take in panoramic views of the city alongside contemplative art pieces and words from Obama speeches. To help fill out a full day of exploring, there is an on-site restaurant or a cafe for quick bites.
