You might tend to think of some self-guided tours as leaving your group tourgoers to their own devices. But at the historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Taliesin estate in Spring Green, Wisconsin, those who opt for the self-guided tours will receive their own devices—an iPad filled with exclusive audio and video content designed to explore the property at any pace. The content even contains audio and video of Wright himself, guiding guests through his home and studio.

“The self-guided tour marks a new chapter in how visitors experience Taliesin, blending the latest technology with the site’s history to offer both returning guests and newcomers alike a unique way to connect with Wright’s legacy,” says Taliesin Preservation Communications Coordinator Elizabeth Maske, via a press release.

Maske was co-creator of the new tour experience alongside Tour Manager Erin Crowley, whose voice appears with Wright’s in narrating the presentation. The tour lasts about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on how quickly guests wish to go. Multimedia visuals supplement Wright’s words, ensuring a more immersive understanding of his design principles.

“You can also learn directly from Wright himself as he explains signature elements of organic architecture in his house, such as corner windows and cantilevers,” continues Maske.
