Travelers are increasingly in search of a bit more quiet in their destinations these days. To that end, luxury home rental site Wander looked into the cities across the United States that fly under the radar. They compared destinations that receive relatively few queries on search engines and posts on social media, then compared that data to what they have to offer in terms of cultural attractions, food scene, natural beauty, safety, and more. The result was a list of what could be considered the most underrated travel cities in the U.S.
Topping the list was Williamsburg, Virginia. This town of just over 15,000 receives around 31,000 online searches per year and less than 3,000 posts on Instagram, yet has a ratio of 150 museums and galleries per 100,000 people. It also boasts Colonial Williamsburg, one of the country’s top living history museums, and also has the historic villages of Jamestown and Yorktown within reach.
A pair of Montana destinations rounds out the top three, with Bozeman and Missoula in second and third, respectively. Bozeman “combines the peaceful pace of a mountain town with next-level food,” says Wander, while Missoula offers a “respectable nightlife scene for a small mountain town.” Bozeman was also named an underrated destination for foodies, with 64.4% of its restaurants rated at four stars or higher on Tripadvisor.
