Tourism Cares, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing sustainability within the travel industry, has released its annual report measuring progress in several key areas, “showcasing a year of notable growth, global collaboration, and continuous momentum toward a more sustainable future for tourism,” says the organization in a press release announcing the report’s release.
“This year marked a defining moment as we embarked on the first chapter of our new 20-year vision,” says Tourism Cares CEO Greg Takehara, via the press release. “By aligning values with action, we’ve seen real progress in connecting the industry with responsible businesses, equipping professionals with the tools for sustainable growth, and building a movement grounded in shared purpose.”
Highlights of the report include increased additions to the Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel Map, showing destinations and suppliers worldwide which have been vetted for their commitment to sustainability. More than 400 new organizations were added to the map in 2024, and it now lists over 600 partners located on five different continents. Another success was the launch of the brand-new Meaningful Travel FAM program, hosting travel professionals in Thailand and Hawaii for an immersive education in sustainable travel practices. More than 2,500 professionals also participated in a variety of other events both in-person and virtually to further their education. Tourism Cares also announced the appointment of a new seven-member board, bringing experience from across the industry.
“The future of travel depends on all of us,” continues Takehara, “and with the leadership of our new board members and the dedication of our global community, we are poised to accelerate positive change across the industry.”
