Brookgreen Gardens is located on the site of four former rice plantations dating back to the 1700s. It is located in Murrells Inlet, SC, just 30 minutes south of Myrtle Beach. The four plantations were purchased in 1930 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington and opened to the public in 1931, making Brookgreen the first public sculpture garden in the United States.
Today, Brookgreen has one of the largest collections of American sculpture known in existence, consisting of over 1700 works in beautifully landscaped sculpture gardens and galleries. A history and wildlife preserve, educational and cultural programs are offered year-round for groups of all ages. Guided or self-guided tours are available and narrated Ricefield Creek Excursions aboard a 40-foot pontoon boat gilding next to riverbanks where rice was cultivated.
