Visit Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s home, The Mount, in Lenox, Massachusetts. Wharton wrote some of her most famous novels at here including Ethan Frome and The House of Mirth. Tour guides share their knowledge of the beauty and history of Wharton’s home and tailor their tour to your group’s particular interests. Advance reservations are required. Arrangements can be made for lunch outdoors on the terrace. Be sure to visit The Mount’s gift shop for specialty items and books. We offer tours of the house and gardens, a book club tour and our popular ghost tour. Interpretive exhibits throughout the house explore Wharton’s life, her humanitarian efforts, literary legacy and lives of the servants. The Mount was named Best House Museum by Yankee Magazine.

Have a book club group? What better place to talk of books and of writers than in the home of one of the best? We will create a sparkling day for your club; with a reserved spot on the terrace, refreshments, and a skilled Wharton interpreter to lead your tour or discussion. Prices vary by package. Be sure to leave plenty of time to browse through our book store’s large selection of Wharton titles, garden and design books, and specialty gifts.

Visit the Main House

Edith Wharton Mount Main House

Tours of the Main House reveal the history of The Mount from its building to its restoration, and chronicles Wharton’s life and her remarkable achievements and legacy. There are no velvet ropes and stanchions, instead we invite our visitors to sit and interact with the rooms. Interpretive exhibits throughout the house explore Wharton’s life, her humanitarian efforts, literary legacy and lives of the servants.

Explore the gardens

Edith Wharton Mount Gardens

The garden tour recounts the history of the estate’s structures and plantings; discusses the influence of Wharton’s 1904 publication, Italian Villas and Their Gardens, on her landscape at The Mount; and reflects Wharton’s passion for gardens and beauty. This tour involves walking and some stairs. For groups with mobility issues, we offer a formal garden talk on the terrace.
