The Packard Proving Grounds in Shelby Township, Michigan, was established in 1928 by the Packard Motor Car Co. to test its vehicles. Today, that legacy lives on, preserved for groups to visit as the Packard Proving Grounds Historic Site—a lovely 17-acre site which appeals to groups interested in automotive history, American history, and beyond. Packard was involved in automotive, marine, and aviation engines, and there are many interesting classic cars and artifacts to view on-site.

Stepping onto the historic grounds will give your group a feel for what life might have been like back in the 1930s. The site features two buildings designed by Albert Kahn, and one building designed by William Kapp. The Lodge House, staged in 1930s furnishings and accessories, is a favorite among groups. But the experience which consistently draws the most attention is no doubt the classic cars. Docent-led historic tours last about 90 minutes, and groups can also arrange for “Packard Taxi Rides” where guests get to take a cruise in classic Packard cars along historic tree-lined parkways.

Groups are invited to bring a lunch and gather after their tour for a relaxed conversation with docents and/or have a group meeting. No on-site catering is available, however there are many options in the area that can deliver to the site, and the Packard Proving Grounds team is happy to help make these arrangements. The site is very motorcoach-friendly, with space for parking and easy maneuverability. This location is especially nice for visitors with mobility issues, because 98% of the tour is on one level and easily accessible.

Groups of 10 or more are asked to make reservations in advance, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. suggested as the best times for groups to visit. Tickets cost $10 per person. Through these preserved grounds and the knowledge of expert docents, guests are sure to leave with a deeper appreciation for the automotive history of the area.
