As the U.S. prepares to celebrate its 250th year in 2026, Colorado is honoring another key anniversary at the same time. Next year marks the 150th anniversary of Colorado’s founding—100 years after the U.S., hence the nickname: The Centennial State.
To honor both of these landmark milestones in American and Colorado history, the state’s newly established America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission is gearing up for a year of special events and initiatives. One such initiative is to add 150 new and revised historic sites to the State Register by 2026. Another initiative features a six-part documentary series designed for Colorado classrooms, titled “The Land We Call Home,” which will be distributed via Rocky Mountain PBS, public libraries, and schools.
For those interested in visiting the Centennial State next year, in-person exhibits will be on display at the History Colorado Center. Titled “38th Star: Colorado Becomes the Centennial State,” one exhibit will outline the significant events that led to statehood in 1876. Also on display will be the “Moments That Made Us” exhibit, which will feature more than 40 artifacts that witnessed the shaping of America.
More special events planned include an organized “14er” climb in the summer, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and featuring assignments tailored to experience levels. (For those unfamiliar with mountain lingo, a 14er is a mountain that reaches more than 14,000 feet in height.) Between 40 and 60 drone shows also are planned throughout the state year-round. Each show will feature visual references to American and Colorado history while showcasing Colorado’s iconic landscape, historical figures, and cultural symbols.
The America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission has launched a statewide digital passport in partnership with the Colorado Tourism Office. This will allow participants to check in at sites to earn rewards, badges, and exclusive offers. The program is designed to encourage both locals and visitors alike to explore the state’s hidden gems, diverse businesses, and rich heritage. historycolorado.org/colorado-150
