The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a National Historic Landmark and America’s longest, highest, and most authentic narrow-gage steam railroad. Co-owned by Colorado and New Mexico, the railroad features 64 miles of narrow-gage track, preserved in its original 1880 condition, winding through the spectacular, rugged wilderness of the Rocky Mountains between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. Much of this route is inaccessible by car, offering your clients views they cannot get anywhere else, including stunning alpine meadows, deep forests, massive rock formations, and abundant wildlife.
One of the favorite experiences among groups is the “All Aboard” Chama or Antonito excursion, a full-line excursion which is the best way to ensure your clients experience the complete majestic spectrum of the Cumbres & Toltec. This journey covers all 64 miles of track, delivering the most complete and immersive experience into the authentic 1880s West.
The journey’s highlights are defined by legendary engineering and dramatic scenery. The centerpiece is the legendary climb up Cumbres Pass, topping out at 10,015 feet. Your clients will experience the steam locomotive working against a demanding 4% grade—the highest sustained elevation for a steam engine in North America—offering dramatic mountain vistas. The route includes the most visually breathtaking section: the Toltec Gorge. Here, the train hugs a narrow ledge 800 feet above the river, providing unparalleled views of rugged geology, inaccessible canyons, and stunning photographic opportunities.
Your group will ride aboard meticulously restored vintage cars, from comfortable Coach to the elegant, all-inclusive Parlor cars. Every ticket includes access to the Open-Air Gondola car for unobstructed viewing and photography. All full-day trips include a hearty, all-you-can-eat, hot lunch buffet at the historic Osier Station, where trains from both directions meet. It’s the perfect location for your groups to mingle, refresh, and learn about Osier’s history.

Knowledgeable docents and dedicated crews bring the history of this frontier line to life, narrating the tales of railroad barons, miners, and the Old West as the landscape rolls by. The Cumbres & Toltec team offers excellent group rates and dedicated support. Full-day trips are structured as one-way rail journeys with a comfortable motorcoach return to the originating depot, which simplifies your bus logistics and offers groups a different view of the area. Flexible offerings include full-line and half-line excursions, or special shorter trips to fit any itinerary pace.
For the upcoming 2026 season, the railroad will offer exciting, themed trains, such as the popular Geology Trains, Dinner & Wine/Beer Trains, Dark Sky Train, and other unique events which can be easily incorporated as special add-ons for discerning groups. In late July/early August 2026, the Cumbres & Toltec will join Colorado in celebrating its 150th anniversary of statehood. They will be running the Centennial State Limited, a special series of limited-run excursions, designed to showcase the incredible role the railway played in opening up the Colorado frontier and connecting the Centennial State to the Southwest.
