GAZE

Each “s” in Des Moines might be silent, but the city itself is anything but. Bubbling to the brim with culture and history, Des Moines is an ideal getaway for groups who want to see the some of the best of the Midwest. Groups visiting Des Moines would be remiss to not experience the Des Moines Art Center, renowned for its collection of modern and contemporary art, including pieces from Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, and Ai Weiwei. Admission to the museum is free, and both guided and self-guided tours are available.

WANDER

The Art Center also offers guided tours of the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park just 3 miles down the road. Groups can enjoy more than 30 sculptures scattered throughout 4.4 acres in the heart of downtown Des Moines. Take a guided tour, wander through the grounds, or settle in for a picnic before heading on to the next stop.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is a great place for groups to connect with botanical wonders from around the globe, right in central Iowa. The garden is open year-round, boasting its “always friendly climate.” Explore gardens of roses, conifers, wildflowers, and savanna grasses in this “urban oasis.” Group tours and special group classes are available, as are group rates for unguided tours.

LEARN

Groups looking for a taste of history will revel in the experience at Living History Farms, located at the edge of the metro area in Urbandale. Open from May to the end of October, the outdoor museum offers a peek into the history of rural Iowa from the beginning of the 18th century through the beginning of the 20th century. Tours are self-guided, but historic interpreters are stationed throughout the 500 acres, working the land of the fully functioning farms and answering questions.
