EXPLORE

Sacramento is California’s capital city, an urban oasis surrounded by 1.5 million acres of farmland. A great location for those looking for something off the beaten path, the region offers a slice of everything that defines California, from farm-fresh cuisine and award-winning wine to countless entertainment options and outdoor adventures to explore.

The Old Sacramento Waterfront is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Sacramento and the American. This is the location where millions of people came to start their journey in hopes of becoming rich during the great gold rush of 1849. Today, it’s a historic district with re-created and restored buildings from the 1850s, along with retail and restaurant options.

LEARN

The California State Railroad Museum is Sacramento’s premier museum. It pays homage to railroad history, specifically the transcontinental railroad which linked Sacramento and Council Bluffs, Iowa, which was completed in 1869 with the driving of the “Golden Spike” now on display. Featuring 21 locomotives and dozens of other railroad displays, including the people of the railroad, the museum showcases the history and future of railroading. Guided tours are available.

The Crocker Art Museum features a diverse collection of artworks that span centuries, continents, and cultures. There is a robust schedule of changing exhibitions, and visitors can explore California art dating from the gold rush to the present, a renowned collection of master drawings and European paintings, one of the largest international ceramics collections in the United States, and collections of Asian, African, and Oceanic art.

SAVOR

One of Sacramento’s must-do’s when in the city, the Midtown Farmer’s Market is ranked No. 1 in California and third in the country. It’s open every Saturday, rain or shine, and spans more than five blocks with over 200 vendors.

Working with a local tour operator, such as Local Roots, visitors can learn about some of the more than 1,000 murals in the city. Combine this with a local food tour to get a taste of the region’s best foods.

In September 2027 (and in odd numbered years thereafter), a world of flavors comes to Sacramento. Downtown transforms into the largest food festival the city has ever hosted with Terra Madre Americas. This event combines Sacramento’s beloved Farm-to-Fork Festival with the U.S. edition of Slow Food International’s renowned Terra Madre Salone del Gusto.
