Located at Lake Superior’s narrowing, western end, Superior has a long and rich history on display at several museums and historical sites. Superior’s maritime history is best experienced at the SS Meteor Maritime Museum, where visitors can climb aboard a bulk carrier that first launched from Superior in 1896. Constructed around the same time is Fairlawn Mansion, the family home of Martin Pattison, a three-term mayor of Superior and mining and lumber industry magnate. The house is now open for tours and public events throughout the year.
PLAY
Being on the shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake offers many opportunities for recreation in Superior, such as boating, birding, hiking, fishing, and plenty more. Superior and surrounding Douglas County are also home to more than 272,000 acres of forest, including two state parks: Pattison and Amnicon Falls. Here, groups can enjoy camping, nature viewing, horseback riding, and educational opportunities focused on the natural history of this diverse region.
BE ENTERTAINED
Superior and Douglas County are full of cultural events for groups to enjoy after a long day of exploring. The local college, the University of Wisconsin-Superior, regularly hosts performances from its music and theater departments. In nearby Solon Springs, the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center, set within Lucius Woods County Park, offers summer concerts under the stars.
