Hot springs offer a unique blend of relaxation, wellness, and historical intrigue, and the southeastern United States is certainly not short on them. From therapeutic mineral waters to invigorating natural pools, these sites provide a refreshing escape for travelers seeking rejuvenation—with a side of history.

Nestled between two mountains, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, proudly proclaims itself “America’s First Spa.” Its aquifer, used for millennia by Native Americans, captivated figures like Lord Fairfax and George Washington, who “were so astounded by its healing mineral water that they enacted a board of trustees to protect the aquifer and ensure that it was not tainted,” says Dusty Martin, executive director of Berkeley Springs. This historical foresight means the protective system is still in place today, Martin says. Beyond its special waters, Berkeley Springs offers a vibrant arts culture, with “dozens of independent artists in [a] town of just over 800 people” and a burgeoning culinary scene featuring “not one but two James Beard [Award]-nominated chefs,” he says. The area also provides ample outdoor adventures, including miles of mountain biking trails, white water rafting, and extensive hiking.

Farther south in the Appalachian Mountains, Hot Springs, North Carolina, offers a quaint and historic experience. Its natural thermal waters have drawn visitors for centuries, providing a serene environment for relaxing. The town itself embraces its heritage with a charming downtown and access to the scenic Appalachian Trail.

Venturing into Virginia, the Warm Springs Pools in Warm Springs have recently reopened after extensive renovations. These historic bathhouses offer a traditional soaking experience in naturally warm, mineral-rich waters, continuing a legacy of wellness that dates back centuries and attracted figures like Thomas Jefferson.

Down in Florida, Warm Mineral Springs Park distinguishes itself as “one of Florida’s few naturally warm springs—and the only one that consistently maintains a soothing temperature of around 85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round,” says Vice President of Marketing and Communications Kelly Harb. The park’s “mineral-dense waters, celebrated for their potential healing qualities, create a restorative atmosphere,” continues Harb. The park is a unique combination of wellness and natural splendor, making it ideal for wellness retreats, senior tours, eco-conscious travelers, or those interested in history and culture, she explains. The site also holds significant archaeological value, with discoveries dating back thousands of years.

A hidden gem in West Virginia, Capon Springs and Farms is gaining recognition for its healing waters and hot springs, says Guest Relations Liaison Jonathan Bellingham. While its outdoor pool maintains a refreshing 65 degrees, the main draw is the “pure heaven” of its heated Roman-style baths, where the naturally alkaline water is warmed to a comfortable 100 degrees. “Capon, which we use … is the Native American word that means medicine, water, healing waters,” says Bellingham. This historical context extends through various periods, from its role in the Civil War to its use by U.S. Olympic teams. Capon Springs prides itself on being an approachable spa, offering an “entry-level experience” for those new to spa relaxation.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, stands out as a unique blend of urban charm and natural wonder. The city itself offers diverse culinary options, but beyond the food, the park boasts more than 20 miles of hiking trails and 32 miles of hiking and mountain biking at Northwoods Trails, says Director of Marketing Bill Solleder. For groups, “Hot Springs has a fascinating history from the original Native Americans, gangster history, the birthplace of Major League Baseball spring training, incredible architecture, and the 4,400-year, 7-mile journey of our treasured thermal waters.”
