OBSERVE NATURAL WONDERS
Decatur is a hidden gem for group travel in North Alabama—easy to reach, affordable, and filled with authentic Southern experiences. This winter, your group can experience one of the South’s most spectacular natural events at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Spanning 35,000 acres along the Tennessee River, the refuge is a haven for bird-watchers and nature lovers.

More than 20,000 sandhill cranes and a few endangered whooping cranes call this wild paradise home each winter, and from Jan. 9-11, 2026, your group can celebrate these majestic birds at the Festival of the Cranes. Spanning two exciting days filled with experiences designed for nature enthusiasts, photographers, or anyone looking for a fun and unique way to enjoy the great outdoors, the Festival of the Cranes offers enriching activities, illuminating educational opportunities, and much more—and it’s all free to attend.
Day 1 begins with guided birding tours at sunrise, then head to the Cook Museum of Natural Science for educational wildlife programs and live raptor demonstrations. In the afternoon, explore downtown’s art exhibits, featuring crane-inspired works by local artists, followed by dinner at one of Decatur’s locally owned restaurants. On Day 2, return to the refuge for more crane viewing and interpretive talks with U.S. Fish and Wildlife experts. The day continues with photography workshops, children’s activities, and cultural performances celebrating the beauty of the Tennessee River region.
TAKE A STROLL

Once your group gets their fill of birding, Decatur offers a perfect winter getaway for groups seeking nature, culture, and authentic small-town charm. A world-class attraction in the heart of downtown, the Cook Museum offers an interactive journey through nature—from the depths of the ocean to the heights of the forest canopy. Historic Downtown Decatur is where charm, culture, and cuisine combine to make a must-visit for groups. Stroll through blocks of beautifully preserved architecture, shop local boutiques and galleries, and enjoy dining that ranges from classic Southern fare to trendy cafes.
Built in 1905, the Historic Union Depot offers a fascinating look at Decatur’s railroading past. Once a bustling passenger station serving multiple rail lines, it now houses engaging exhibits, artifacts, and guided tours that transport visitors back to the golden age of train travel. The site’s accessibility and step-on tour options make it a perfect addition to any heritage or history-focused itinerary.
SEE A SHOW
Once a 1920s silent film house, the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts now shines as Decatur’s cultural centerpiece. This beautifully restored Art Deco venue hosts live music, theater, dance, and film events throughout the year. Groups can arrange private tours of the historic building or plan an evening outing around a live performance—an unforgettable way to experience the arts in Decatur.
Throughout the year, Decatur hosts a full calendar of festivals and special events—from the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic to the River Clay Fine Arts Festival—giving planners countless ways to customize itineraries around authentic local experiences.
