North Carolina’s city of arts and innovation, Winston-Salem is a feast for the thoughtful group traveler. Ever evolving from its traditional Moravian, tobacco and textile roots, Winston-Salem is a thriving city gaining popularity as a destination that boasts a rich history and an impressive culinary scene reflective of its Southern heritage.
“It’s no wonder Winston-Salem was voted as one of Forbes’ Top 10 Best Downtowns,” said Kay Calzolari, CTIS, group tour and services manager for Visit Winston-Salem. “We warmly welcome active, lifelong learners to explore and delight in all our community has to offer.”
A ‘NEW’ OLD SALEM
Settled by Moravians more than 260 years ago, groups can celebrate Winston-Salem’s Colonial roots in Old Salem Museums & Gardens. Tour heirloom gardens, savor historic culinary traditions, and try your hand at Moravian crafts including pottery and quilting. Discover the history of Salem’s enslaved and freed Africans and African Americans through Old Salem’s Hidden Town Project.
THE MORAVIAN CULINARY TRAIL
Winston-Salem offers a Moravian Culinary Trail experience that celebrates our deep Moravian food roots. Roll out whisper-thin Moravian cookies, voted “Oprah’s favorite,” at Mrs. Hanes Handmade Moravian Cookies. Knead the dough at Winkler Bakery in Old Salem, circa 1800, to bake a buttery and slightly sweet Moravian sugar cake.
ALONG THE HISTORIC REYNOLDA MILE
For a mix of classic and contemporary, head to Reynolda Mile. At its heart is the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the 1917 estate of tobacco magnate, R.J. Reynolds. Today it’s home to American art, the original 1913 greenhouse and gardens, and Reynolda Village, which is full of shops and eateries.
VINEYARD HOP IN THE YADKIN VALLEY WINE REGION
Conveniently and centrally located in North Carolina, Winston-Salem is the gateway to more than 45 wineries in the Yadkin Valley, the state’s first and largest American Viticultural Area (AVA). Sip on a glass of Chardonnay at Childress Vineyards, owned by NASCAR legend, Richard Childress, swirl a Cab Franc at dairy farm-turned-vineyard, RayLen, and see breathtaking mountain views at Raffaldini, an Italian-style winery.
