Set to open in September of this year, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures — dedicated to the art and sciences of movies — will feature six floors.
The museum will be located in the historic Saban Building in Los Angeles, California, and will be connected to a new, spherical addition via glass bridges.
“The Academy Museum will be the world’s premier museum of cinema in the world’s moviemaking capital,” said an Academy Museum spokesperson. “More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.”
A number of exhibits will be available once the museum opens.
Stories of Cinema is divided into multiple galleries and is a continually changing exhibit, featuring different movies, artists, genres and more.
“Throughout the exhibition, visitors will be surrounded by moving images, costumes, scripts, posters, production and costume design drawings, matte paintings, photographs, backdrops, animation cels, maquettes and more,” the Academy Museum said.
Experience what it is like to walk on stage and accept an Oscar at The Oscars® Experience. Enjoy a movie screening or a panel discussion at the 288-seat Ted Mann Theater. A number of programs will also show in the theater, with focuses ranging from social activism to key moments in Academy Awards history.
“Theaters are equipped with Dolby Atmos and will allow viewers to see movies as they were originally meant to be seen: 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, digital laser project and even nitrate,” the Academy Museum said.
In September, the museum will additionally welcome a temporary exhibit highlighting the acclaimed artist and filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. The exhibit — the first of its kind in North America — houses more than 300 objects, some of which are outside of Japan for the first time.
Other anticipated spaces at the museum are the Shirley Temple Education Studio, special event spaces, restaurant and café, store, rooftop Dolby Family Terrace and more.
Between the museum and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the collections boasts more than 12.5 million photographs; 237,000 film and video assets; 85,000 screenplays; 65,500 posters; and 133,000 pieces of production art.
“When it opens in September 2021, the museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational and entertaining,” the Academy Museum said. The Academy Museum of Motion Picture plans to announce admission prices and group tour details at a later date.
