AGRISCIENCE

Loudoun’s rich agricultural history is brought to life at Great Country Farms. For more than 20 years, the working farm has been serving students with experiences that teach concepts ranging from how produce is grown to the importance of pollinators like honeybees and the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. The farm has a special program about compost where students can add their lunch scraps to the composting bins. While there, enjoy wagon rides, a walk through the country store and meeting the farm animals.

PHYS-ED

Summit Ropes offers educational programs for students that converge mind and body with any lesson plan to provide an alternate style of learning and improve retention. The company , which opened earlier this year, features the largest indoor ropes course in the U.S. Designed after Zion National Park, this facility is a unique place to teach lessons like teamwork, perseverance and problem solving outside the classroom. 

HISTORY

The Marshall House, the home of George and Katherine Marshall, is steeped in history from one of the world’s most pivotal time periods. The house’s objects and furnishings provide connections to history and to the man who both shaped the allied victory during World War II and rebuilt the countries of former enemies. Students can walk through the Marshalls’ private lives away from public calls of duty.

Students also can step into the past at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, whichencompasses 360 acres and features a circa-1804 Greek Revival mansion, rare 19th-century brick dependencies and a magnificent English terraced garden. Students learn about everything from the roles of enslaved and free African Americans to life on the homefront during the Civil War.
