The Science Museum of Minnesota in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, brings science, technology, engineering, math and social studies concepts to life.
“Many of our schools introduce or wrap up a unit of study with a field trip to the museum,” said Larry Thomas, director of student programs. “With our self-guided explorations, hands-on exhibits, theater performances and educator guides, students can maximize their learning experience.”

The goal of the museum’s educational programs is to engage students and teachers in relevant and impactful STEM learning experiences both at the museum and throughout the state.
“Our live demonstration and interpretation programs captivate students in the explorations of topics ranging from electricity to dinosaurs, cryogenics to storms on stage,” Thomas said. “School Outreach and Science Live performances invite and excite student learning in large group settings.”
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the museum offers 370,000 square feet of space. It includes a 10,000-square-foot temporary exhibit gallery, five permanent galleries, acres of outdoor space and an Imax Convertible Dome Omnitheater.
There is a little bit of something for everyone in the museum’s exhibits and programs, Thomas said. From sportsology to dinosaurs and fossils, students explore STEM topics that apply to them.
The best part about the museum’s school programs, according to Thomas, is that students can participate in facilitated learning experiences with the museum’s talented team of educators as they interact with exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities.
