The hands-on aerospace education center Flight Works Alabama was developed through a partnership between the multinational European aerospace corporation Airbus and the State of Alabama.
Located in Mobile, Flight Works Alabama centers around the Airbus Foundation’s Discovery Space Exhibit Gallery, which includes over 40 hands-on and interactive experiences.
“Visitors can see and feel the forces that affect the flight of an aircraft, take-off and land a virtual Airbus A320 at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, install a simulated payload on the International Space Station and much more,” said Kayley Robinson, marketing and communications manager at Flight Works Alabama.
Students can even race a drone through the enclosed obstacle course in the center’s outdoor Drone Fly Zone.
“Flight Works Alabama is a place where students and educators can expand their knowledge and have fun while doing so,” Robinson said.
Choose from an array of hands-on workshops and classes for student groups — including subjects and activities like 3D printing, sublimation, computer aided design, robotics and more.
“‘Shop Works,’ our workshop, includes a variety of Snap-on Tools, workbenches and mechanical equipment students can use to construct designs,” Robinson said. “‘Class Works,’ our classroom, includes 24 desks and computers, installed with design software, audio visual equipment with livestreaming capabilities, a video wall and more.”
In addition, Flight Works Alabama’s Pratt & Whitney Multipurpose Room houses the center’s largest video wall and space for up to 75 people, when at full capacity.
No visit to the center is complete without a tour of the Airbus A320 Final Assembly Line, where students will see the production of commercial aircrafts right before their eyes.
